Helsinki celebrates in June
Urban culture blooms on Helsinki Day 12.6., the city’s birthday, and all Helsinki Week 7.-15.6. The North Carelia Province days will fill the Senate Square with music, dance, discussions and local delicacies 13.-15.6.
During Helsinki Week 7.-15.6 there will be a Samba Carnaval in the city centre, partying on the grounds of the future Central Library, a Walking Festival in Kallio, a Bike Show and lots of other events.
Helsinki was founded by the Swedish king Gustavus Wasa on June 12 in 1550. The tradition of celebrating the city’s birthday goes back to the 1950’s. The streets and parks pulsate with music, street art, dance and theatre. Opens doors and guided tours show new aspects of the city.

The secrets of military islands
Virka Gallery 5.6.-1.9.2013.
The Treasure Islands exhibition opens doors to Helsinki’s maritime history. It tells about the centuries of history and the diverse nature of the islands under the control of the Finnish Defence Forces.
The islands off the coast of Helsinki, which have been fortified and built for military use since the time of Russian rule, are still not open for the general public. Nowadays, these islands host rare animal and plant species.
Eight photographers have visited twelve islands. Visitors to the photo exhibition at Virka Gallery can step into the territory of the mysterious military islands and be transported to the landscapes of hidden treasures.
