The history of trams in Helsinki dates back over a hundred years. Horse-drawn trams appeared on the streets in 1891 and the first electric tramline, between Töölö and Hietalahdentori square, entered service on 4 September 1900. Over a hundred years of tram history includes many interesting stages in the development of tram traffic in Helsinki, from the tramline connection in the villa community of Kulosaari to modern transport solutions in a heavily trafficked, motorised city.

With some 200,000 passengers every weekday, trams have established their position as the main form of public transport in the inner city.

There are 122 tramcars operating on a total of 11 routes consisting of 71 kilometres of tramlines. The tramlines are being further extended: Line 6 has just been extended to the new residential area of Arabianranta and plans are under way for a completely new line 9. Initially tram No. 9 will operate between Kirurgi and Itä-Pasila.
