To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Vuosaari House, Vuosaari House and the Finnish Museum of Photography invited photography hobbyists from Vuosaari to take part in the Nighttime Photos of Vuosaari project.
The photographers from different backgrounds could capture the night from the point of view of their choice. They faced a fascinating challenge: how to photograph the darkness, how to find light in the night? They have a passion for both photography and Vuosaari. Their photos show Vuosaari as beautiful, bleak and mystical. The images combine night-time wandering in nature and wastelands and staying up at home, isolating during the coronavirus pandemic, working night shifts and making new acquaintances at night. The route of this journey to Vuosaari is also illustrated – the photos of Vuosaari bridge and the harbour form a circle inside which the night takes place.
At workshops held in October 2020, participants learned about nocturnal photography – by discussing and taking photographs. At the workshops, they focused on the theme of night from various perspectives: they discussed the photos taken by the participants and studied the photos from the museum related to night photography. The workshops were visited by photographers Stefan Bremer and Hans von Schantz who told the participants about their work and provided feedback on the group’s photos. The group also visited the Atlas of Emotions exhibition by Jari Silomäki, guided by the artist himself, at the Finnish Museum of Photography. The workshops were instructed by photographer and art pedagogue Salla Keskinen from the Finnish Museum of Photography.
The exhibition of 30 photos, consisting of the participants’ works and pieces from the collection of the Finnish Museum of Photography, will be on display at the Vuosaari House gallery from 14 October to 18 December 2021. The entry to the exhibition is free.
Vuosaari House’s 20th anniversary
During the autumn, the cultural centre for the residents of Vuosaari will be celebrated. In addition to the celebratory exhibition, the autumn offers varied and polyphonic activities, as well as Vuosaari House’s own celebration weeks. You can see the latest information on the anniversary events on Vuosaari House’s website.
Nowadays, the operators in the house, the adult education centre, the library and the cultural services, offer services to half a million customers every year. As the largest district in Helsinki, Vuosaari is growing and changing rapidly. Vuosaari House is involved in the dialogue related to the changes with various sectors, local organisations and residents – this way, the local cultural centre can continue to serve its customers in the best possible way.
