A floating pontoon bridge will be installed between Ehrenströmintie in Merisatama and the northern part of the island of Uunisaari on Monday 16 November. The floating bridge will remain in pedestrian use until 15 April 2021.
Uunisaari, which is located in front of Kaivopuisto, has a total area of approximately three hectares and comprises the southern and northern island, which are connected. Uunisaari is also connected to the adjacent Liuskasaari island by a bridge. Uunisaari is a traditional recreational site for the residents of Helsinki, having housed a seaside spa in the 19th century. In the past, there was also an oil boiling facility and a paint factory on Uunisaari, and at one point the island was even used as a site for making coffins.
Nowadays the island houses the private restaurant Uunisaari (https://www.uunisaari.fi/), saunas for rent with stoves powered by natural gas, and a café, which is open from 21 November onwards on Saturdays and Sundays.
