The City of Helsinki has signed a contract with YIT and Caverion on the implementation of a new building for the Vuosaari Upper Secondary School as a life cycle project. The total value of the contract is 32 million euros. The school building is the City’s first life cycle project.
The construction company YIT will design and construct the school building, and Caverion will be responsible for the design and implementation of Total Technical Solutions, including all building systems. The building is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2021, and afterwards Caverion will be responsible for property maintenance and for achieving the building’s targeted levels of energy consumption for 20 years.
Much-needed expansion of upper secondary school education in eastern Helsinki
“The City of Helsinki will have a new upper secondary school building, after a long break in upper secondary school development in the city. We will have a new high-standard building for 900 students in the heart of Vuosaari, and the building will be available for extensive other uses, serving leisure-time and citizen activities after school hours. The life cycle model applied in the development will enable the City to manage building quality risks better than before,” says project leader Vuokko Uusikangas of the City of Helsinki Urban Environment Division’s construction contracting unit.
The capacity of the Vuosaari Upper Secondary School will grow from the current 500 students to approximately 900 students with the new building. The school building will be designed to meet the requirements of the new curriculum, and the building will serve as a regional centre for multiple activities on evenings and weekends.
The contractors have mutual experience with life cycle projects
YIT and Caverion’s Finnish operation Caverion Suomi Oy have collaborated in life cycle projects before. Their previous joint life cycle projects comprise the Kirsti and Viherlaakso schools in Espoo, the Torkinmäki school in Kokkola and Nummi Centre in Hämeenlinna.
The life cycle model of development ensures that the new building is safe and healthy. With systematic property management and maximized energy efficiency, the property’s carbon footprint can be kept minimal.
