Cycling Week encourages everybody to ride a bicycle

The Helsinki metropolitan area celebrates bicycle riding during the Cycling Week 4–12 May. People of all ages are welcome to the week’s events, tours and informal hanging out. You don’t need to have a bicycle of your own but can join the week, for example, by renting a bicycle from the City Bike bike-sharing system.

The Cycling Week programme includes breakfast served to cyclists, guided cycling tours and opportunities to learn about the latest bicycles available on the market, special bicycles and bicycle repair.

“The purpose of the Cycling Week is to encourage as many people as possible to cycle and to enjoy our pleasant metropolitan area by cycling,” says Henni Ahvenlampi, director of the cycling society Helsinki Cyclists.

“Our goal is to bring together diverse cyclists and to inspire non-cyclists to cycle. We want to present cycling as an approachable and natural part of everybody’s life.”

The Cycling Week is coordinated by Helsinki Cyclists, and the other organizers comprise the City of Helsinki, Helsinki Region Transport (HSL), Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) and a number of cycling enterprises and actors.
