The Finlandia Hall

Finlandia Hall illumination to honour people doing vital coronavirus work

The Mayor of Helsinki Jan Vapaavuori has decided that starting 4 April, the facade of the Finlandia Hall in central Helsinki will be illuminated with blue lighting every evening. The gesture is meant to honour workers in the health care industry and other sectors who are providing vital services during the covid-19 crisis.

The lighting will begin each day at dusk and continue each night until further notice.

“The gesture is intended to show our gratitude to all of those who are doing invaluable work under these difficult circumstances. At the same time, we want to encourage city residents to persevere during this trying time,” said Mayor Vapaavuori.

The colourful illumination of famous landmarks has become a familiar phenomenon around the world. The City of Helsinki decided in 2018 that it would start illuminating the iconic Finlandia Hall to mark special occasions.
