Traditional Vappu celebrations will not be organised in Helsinki this year and no gatherings should be held. To entertain Helsinki residents for Vappu at Home, a versatile programme is offered by the City of Helsinki and its partners. Vappu Eve is kicked off by the traditional Crowning of Manta, which takes place in virtual reality this year. The night goes on with JVG who are performing live in Virtual Helsinki and everyone can join from home with their own avatar.
Restrictions made to help slow down the spread of the coronavirus epidemic have caused the traditional Vappu celebrations to be canceled in Helsinki. According to the instructions from the officials, no gatherings should take place.
“Vappu is an important and dear tradition for people in Helsinki. This year, it will be celebrated in exceptional circumstances. As physical gatherings are not possible under the current circumstances, we have created, together with our partners, a vast and versatile array of programme for Vappu to be enjoyed at home”, says the Mayor of Helsinki, Jan Vapaavuori.
“The restrictions implemented due to the coronavirus crisis hit hard on the events and music industry. At the same time, however, new innovations and digital services have enabled new ways of organising concerts and events. On Vappu Eve, we’ll have the chance to experience both the Crowning of Manta and JVG’s live concert in Virtual Helsinki, the digital twin created from the center of Helsinki. The experience will be unique and we hope it will bring a genuine sense of community to the celebrations of Vappu at Home.”
Safe at home
While encouraging Helsinki residents to stay at home and enjoy the versatile programme for the Vappu celebrations, the city wants to remind everyone on the safety at home.
“The wellbeing of the family and loved ones is important for everyone. The exceptional circumstances and demands on social distancing are changing the everyday life and traditions at home. It is important to address emerging problems well in advance and take care of our coping with the crisis, especially with children, young people and the elderly. There is help offered for troublesome situations, even during Vappu time”, reminds Vapaavuori.
In addition to the programme for the celebrations for Vappu, there will be a listing on the city’s website on different bodies offering help and support also during Vappu.
The special arrangements for Vappu were introduced during the Mayor’s info on Thursday April 23 on the Helsinki channel www.helsinkikanava.fi
