Children who were born in Helsinki in 2012 must enrol for school in January either online or by visiting the school. In the autumn, approximately 6400 children will start school in Helsinki.
The ‘Tervetuloa kouluun’ guidebook for new pupils and the compulsory education note will be posted to you at home
The Education Division of the City of Helsinki sends a guidebook (in Finnish) for new pupils to all the new first-graders at the beginning of January. This guidebook offers information on starting school and afternoon activities. The compulsory education note will be sent along with the guidebook. You will find the child’s local school and temporary Wilma identification for enrolment in the note. The first day of school of the 2019–2020 semester is Thursday 8 August 2019 at Finnish-speaking schools and Tuesday 13 August 2019 at Swedish-speaking schools.
Enrol online or by visiting the school
You can enrol your child at your local school through the Wilma system from 7 to 23 January 2019 at wilma.edu.hel.fi. The service is available in Finnish, Swedish and English. You can also enrol at the school at 8.00–10.00 or at 17.00–19.00 on Wednesday 23 January 2019. In some cases, you can only enrol in person at the school. If the child is applying to a school that is not their local school or taking an aptitude test to apply to a weighted-curriculum, you must enrol at the school in question.
