Compulsory education for children who were born in 2015 will begin in August 2022. Enrol online or by visiting the school. Next autumn’s first-graders were sent a ‘Tervetuloa kouluun’ (Welcome to school) guidebook in late October with comprehensive information on starting school. You can also find more information on starting school at hel.fi/welcometoschool.
Information about your local school is available in the compulsory education note and online at asti.hel.fi
Information about your child’s local school is available in the compulsory education note and will be available online on Asti at asti.hel.fi for the period 5–30 January 2022. Logging in is required to access this information. Compulsory education notes will be sent out via the Suomi.fi service starting from 5 January 2022. If the child’s guardian has enabled Suomi.fi Messages for the child, their compulsory education note will be sent electronically. If this has not been enabled, the note will be posted to the child’s home address by mid-January.
Electronic school enrolment on Asti is preferred
Guardians will be able to enrol their child at their local school during the period 5–30 January 2022 on Asti at asti.hel.fi. The service is available in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Due to the current coronavirus situation, it is recommended that guardians enrol their children electronically and avoid a physical visit to the school. However, guardians may also enrol their children by visiting the school on Wednesday 26 January 2022 8:00–10:00 am. If the school operates at more than one location, enrol at the main school. When attending the enrolment event, please adhere to current coronavirus hygiene, safety and mask guidance. Even at the school, the enrolment will bw conducted electronically on Asti at asti.hel.fi.
In some cases, you can only enrol in person at the school: if, for example, your child is starting school a year later or has been granted extended compulsory education. If the child is applying to a school that is not their local school, you must enrol at the school in question.
Roughly 6,500 children to start school in Helsinki in the autumn
The first day of school of the 2022–2023 school year is Thursday 11 August 2022 at Finnish-speaking schools and Swedish-speaking schools.
