Numbers of waterfowl grew manifold after restoration of wetlands
The recently finished project Lintulahdet Life gave very encouraging results. The objective of this EU project was to improve the biodiversity and recreational use of wetlands in Uusimaa and Southeastern Finland. Vanhankaupunginlahti Bay was included from Helsinki. The bird populations of the restored and managed wetlands grew manifold and the bird fauna became more diverse. Due to the new birding towers, the number of visitors increased too. The number of restored areas was 12. The total area of new meadows cleared and mowed during the project was 185 hectares. No less than 170 hectares of these meadows have already started to receive the special environmental support for agriculture.
