Opean-air -gallery 2007
The street galleries of Museokatu, Eerikinkatu and Fleminginkatu in Helsinki are based on the idea that fine art should be more visible in public spaces. The grey distribution cabinets alongside pavements fulfil many functions in addition to actual electricity distribution. 36 of the cabinets are now dedicated to street gallery art. The Museokatu gallery shows graphic art. The exhibition consists of six artists, each with two pieces of work. New this year is the Fleminginkatu street gallery in Kallio, dedicated to drawings. The gallery functions as a link to graphics, as the same six artists have each contributed two of their drawings or sketches to the exhibition. The third art form well suited to reproducing on plexiglass is photography, which is exhibited on Eerikinkatu. This year, the common theme of the three street gallery exhibitions is Man. The street gallery project was launched in 2005, when the University of Art and Design Helsinki organized a workshop with Helsinki Energy, with the objective of finding new visual ideas to improve the appearance of the approximately 8,000 power distribution cabinets around the city.
