One of the cleanest metropolitan areas in Europe
The Helsinki metropolitan area is one of the cleanest metropolitan areas in Europe in terms of air quality. Over the past decades, progress has been made in air quality management and concentrations of sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and lead have decreased. Concentrations of other impurities have remained nearly unchanged or increased only slightly although the number of inhabitants, traffic volumes and energy production have increased substantially. Limit values set for both particle and nitrogen dioxide concentrations are exceeded mainly in downtown Helsinki and along major roads.
