Expansion to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport?s international terminal
Finavia started construction work on the extension in September 2006 and the work will be completed in autumn 2009. On its completion, the extended international terminal will accommodate 15-16 million passengers per year and 13.5 million baggage items per year. Currently, there are around 12.8 million passengers per year and 9 million baggage items per year. The extension will primarily serve traffic to the Far East as it is currently the most rapidly growing air traffic segment at Helsinki-Vantaa: during 2007 transit traffic between Asia and Europe has increased by 35 per cent. As a result of its geographical location, Helsinki-Vantaa offers the fastest and most direct route between Europe and Asia. There are 11 direct connections to destinations in the Far East from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. There are nearly 60 flights per week to Asia, which is the most in a comparison of the Nordic countries.
