Love and danger
Fear and danger lurk in the dark waters in the exciting work of the Helsinki City Theatre’s dance group Helsinki Dance Company. Who's afraid of the killer shark had its first premiere on 13 March in Helsinki City TheatreĀ“s Studio Elsa. The work examines life through action that is born out of fear. Visiting choreographer Joona Halonen’s movement, sound and visual aspects combine in the mise-en-scene to create a feeling of excitement and danger which keeps the spectator physically on edge too. As the work progresses it is possible to sense the creator’s attempt to understand how even the most tragic actions sometimes also include comic features.
Helsinki Dance Company will premier its latest dance theatre piece Rakkaus (To Love) on the Helsinki City Theatre’s small stage on 25 April. The piece, directed and choreographed by Ari Numminen, presents an age-old topic as it explores how people of different ages experience love in its various forms. The show, which is especially aimed at young people, will tour schools and educational institutions around Finland during the autumn semester.
Helsinki Dance Company was founded in 1973 and was originally called Helsinki City Theatre Dance Company. The group is comprised of 12 brilliant dancers who represent the undisputed cream of the dance field. Half of the group perform only in HDC’s touring repertoire while the other half perform in the City Theatre’s other productions too. Helsinki City Theatre, founded in 1964, is the biggest professional repertoire theatre in Finland
