Swimming ability is considered a skill everyone should have in Finland, the land of thousands of lakes and beaches. It is a skill necessary for one´s own safety but also for having a good time. During the Winter season the swimming halls are excellent places for recreation.

Swimming hall services play an important role in the services of cities as swimming and other water exercises are suitable for nearly everyone and considered as important forms of health-promoting exercise and rehabilitation. In Helsinki there are more than a dozen swimming halls.

Welcome to the swimming hall! is the title of a guide in 10 languages on the web that has been prepared by the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (FSL)with the help of financial aid granted by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.
The aim is to guide both personnel and visitors so that swimming hall services would be suitable for everyone living in Finland and used according to safety and hygiene requirements.

The purpose is also to increase the personnel’s understanding of different cultural backgrounds and to offer support for service providers in case of problems.

The guide gives useful information about practices in the swimming halls concerning for instance dressing rooms, swimsuits, the safety of children and the use of showers and the sauna.
