The Senate Square
The Senate Square is the main square of Helsinki and also one of the city's best known attractions. Many nationally remarkable and even internationally intriguing events have taken place on the square, from political demonstrations to celebrations of the Helsinki Day every year and our victory in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. Moreover, the citizens of Helsinki have received the New Year on Senate Square since 1932.
The construction of Senate Square started after Helsinki was chosen as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812. The square is surrounded by Empire style buildings which represent the secular and spiritual powers central to the early 19th century, from the University to the Government Palace. Uppermost rise the snow-white domes of the Lutheran Cathedral. The grand flight of steps in front of the Cathedral is now a popular place to hang out for modern citizens. The old Tori Quarters on the southern side of the square have been filled with small boutiques, cafés and restaurants.
