The Hietalahti Square
The Hietalahti Market Hall at the Hietalahti Square was built in 1903 as a market hall for groceries. In recent years the Jugend style building has served as a market hall for art and antiques. In February this year the modernized hall opened again as a food market with a sushi bar and other restaurants as well as stands for pop up stores.
The Hietalahti Square with its popular flea market is one of the oldest market squares in Helsinki. The square is surrounded by prominent buildings, among them a neo-renessaisance style building from 1870’s, which now houses the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, and what remains of the premises of the oldest brewery in Helsinki next to the Sinebrychoff art museum. Next summer the Tall Ships’ Race is expected to bring large numbers of visitors to Hietalahti harbour as one of the event venues.
