Arkkitehti sijoitti Kristiinankadun työväenasuntojen kellariin paitsi kunkin asunnon perunakomeron myös halkoliiterin ja käymälän, jotka tavallisesti sijaitsivat pihalla. Näin työväenasuntojen pihasta tuli siisti ja avara.

Halkoluukun kautta lastattiin syksyisin isot puupöllit kadulta sisään liitereihin. Asukkaat sahasivat, pilkkoivat ja pinosivat itse puunsa, koska valmiit halot olivat monille liian kalliita. Lapset keräsivät rannoilta ja työmailta jätepuuta polttopuuvaraston täydennykseksi.

Työväenasuntojen väki viljeli perunansa 1950-luvulle asti tyhjillä naapuritonteilla. Talveksi perunat varastoitiin kellarikomeron laariin. Komeron hyllyille pantiin hillopurkkeja, mehupulloja ja muuta ruokatavaraa.

I källaren i Kristinegatans arbetarbostäder placerade arkitekten förutom varje bostads potatisförråd också en vedbod och ett avträde som vanligtvis fanns ute på gården. Detta gjorde att gårdsplanen vid arbetarbostäderna var snygg och öppen. 

Genom vedluckan lastades om höstarna stora kubbar in i vedbodarna från gatan. De boende sågade, högg och staplade själva sin ved, då färdigt kluven ved var alltför dyr för många. Barnen fyllde på vedförrådet med avfallsved som de samlade på stränder och byggen.

Folket i arbetarbostäderna odlade sin potatis ända till 1950-talet på de tomma granntomterna. På vintern förvarades potatisen i låren i källarskrubben. På skrubbens hyllor förvarades syltburkar, saftflaskor och andra matvaror.

In the basement of the workers' houses on Kristiinankatu, the architect wanted to place not only the potato storage for each apartment, but also their firewood storage and dry toilet, which were normally placed outside. This made the yard of the workers' houses clean and spacious.

The large wood logs were loaded into the fire wood storages through the wood hatch in the autumn. The residents sawed, chopped and piled their own fire wood, because ready-made firewood was too expensive for most. Children gathered junk wood from the shores and construction sites to further fill the firewood storage of the family.

The people in the workers' houses grew their potatoes on the empty neighbouring plots up until the 1950s. The potatoes were stored in a bin in the basement for the winter. The shelves were filled with preserves, juice bottles, and other foodstuffs.
