About us
Helsinki Skills Center
The Helsinki Skills Center offers multi-professional support and guidance for Helsinki-based immigrants. Our services combine education and employment services. Our aim is to speed up the educational and employment paths and to ease immigrants’ transition into working life. The Helsinki Skills Center came into operation in 2016 and it is the first Skills Center in Finland.
Requirements
Our clients must:
- be over 17 years old
- have a have residence permit
- live in Helsinki
Clients are referred to the Skills Center via the Employment and Economic Development Office (TE Office) or social services.
The process
At the Helsinki Skills Center, clients will first participate in a 2-week assessment where they get basic knowledge about our services and will participate in mathematical and Finnish language skills evaluation. During the assessment, clients are also scheduled for a personal interview with a teacher.
After the skills assessment, the options are:
- Vocational workshops where one will learn professional skills and Finnish vocabulary in the chosen professional field. The vocational workshops include, for example, construction workshops, nursing workshops, car mechanics and hair and beauty workshops.
- Finnish language workshops where one can study the language while learning about the different study options.
- Job coaching (työelämävalmennus) where one can get personal guidance in accessing work opportunities. We offer support in various languages, including Arabic, Somali and English.
