A 4-year-old child begins to take other people more into consideration and amazes other people with his or her thoughtfulness. The child thinks of him or herself as being big, despite still being small.
At the age of 4, children will undergo an extensive health check-up at a child health clinic. The child’s well-being and development are evaluated with the help of the Hyve model, which comprises an early childhood education discussion and health examinations performed by a nurse and doctor at a child health clinic. The extensive health check-up examines the well-being and health of the whole family. The meeting with the family is carried out in accordance with a discussion checklist, which is available in several languages (see the links on the right).
The health check-up of a 4-year-old child in home care is carried out at a child health clinic in accordance with the extensive health check-up scheme. The health check-up of a 4-year-old child includes administering the DTap-IPV vaccine (combination vaccine against tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis and polio). The child should be told about vaccinations honestly. Depending on the child’s personality and way of processing things, he or she may be told about the vaccinations either in advance or not until during the appointment. In connection with the check-up, it would be preferable if the child can be left alone with the nurse to do exercises. If this is not possible, a parent or relative may be present during the check-up.
See the guidebook by the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare below for more information on the development of a 4-year-old (in Finnish).
