Rewarding athletes from Helsinki

Information on the 2018 Helsinki Athlete of the Year award will be added to these pages in early 2018.

The City Of Helsinki rewards athletes from Helsinki in several ways every year

In 2012 the City Board confirmed the following awarding principles and financial recognitions – or grants – for sporting achievement: For international sporting achievements, Helsinki athletes who succeed in the Olympics and Paralympics, as well in as world championships held in Olympic sports: individual sports in the general category and sports for the disabled, team sports in the general category and sports for the disabled, and in the youth category, in sports for which official world championships are organised are awarded as follows:

Individual sports

World Championships (Olympic sports) €7,500, €5,000, €2,500

Sports for the disabled  
Paralympics €10,000, €7,500, €5,000  
World Championships (Paralympic sports) €7,500, €5,000, €2,500

Youth series (oldest age group)  
World Championships (Paralympic sports) €3,750, €2,500, €1,250

Team Sports  
General category 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place,  
Olympics €5,000, €3,750, €2,500  
World Championships (Olympic sports) €3,750, €2,500, €1,250

Sports for the disabled  
Paralympics €5,000, €3,750, €2,500  
World Championships (Paralympic sports) €3,750, €2,500, €1,250

Youth series (oldest age group)  
World Championships (Olympic sports) €1,850, €1,250, €750

Grants are awarded for achievement of a medal in Olympic and Paralympic sports, and World Championships in official Olympic sports. The home municipality of the awardee must be Helsinki both at the time of the achievement and awarding of the prize. Athletes or teams can be awarded only one recognition per calendar year. Recognition will be awarded on the basis of the best achievement in 2016 - 2017. The grants are awarded from the City Board’s allocations, and recognitions can be applied for immediately after the achievement.

Furthermore, sporting achievements are rewarded annually on Helsinki Day by distributing the following recognitions, or grants

Helsinki Athlete of the Year €10,000  
Helsinki Sports Club of the Year €5,000  
Young Helsinki Athlete of the Year €2,500  
Helsinki Coach of the Year €2,500

Helsinki Athlete or Team of the Year and Young Helsinki Athlete of the Year  
Helsinki Sports Club of the Year and Helsinki Coach of the Year  

Achievements between 15 May 2016 and 15 May 2017 will be considered. The selection of the Helsinki Athlete or Team of the Year and Young Helsinki Athlete of the Year take into account all types of sport.

The Helsinki Sports Club of the Year and Helsinki Coach of the Year prizes are not granted based on competition successes, but rather on the club’s and the coach’s special merits as educators of children and young people, or in the creation of new innovative operating practices. The Helsinki Sports Prize Committee will make the selections and the prizes will be awarded on Helsinki Day, on 12 June 2017.

Information required for nominations  
In order to award the above-mentioned grants, we need information about the achievements or other deserving activities of Helsinki’s athletes, young athletes, teams, clubs and coaches.

Sports Services proposes parties to receive awards to the City Board, and therefore we ask you to confirm that the home municipality of the nominees is Helsinki – both at the time of the achievement and when the awards are to be presented – before the information is submitted. Please submit the required information – i.e. confirmation that the nominee’s home municipality is Helsinki at the required points in time, names and contact information, and details of the achievements (plus confirmation from the sports federation), or details of other deserving activities, by 15 May 2017 to the Sports Services.
