As rail traffic extends to the west, to the new track section from Ruoholahti to Matinkylä, new vehicles are needed for metro transport.

To meet the needs of the growing metro traffic, HKL has ordered 20 four-carriage metro trains from Spanish rail equipment manufacturer CAF. The first metro will be tested in 2015. The whole series will be delivered between 2015 and 2016.

The new metro trains are nearly 90 metres long and all the carriages have access to each other. There is space for around 600 passengers. The carriages have air conditioning.

The new metro trains are equipped with automated machinery, but initially they will be operated by a driver. For this, the metro trains have a temporary cabin, which will be disassembled when automated driving is introduced.
