Two different types of metro trains run on the metro lines of Helsinki. Both the older and newer series’ train units are composed of two closely interconnected motor carriages. In total, there are 54 pairs of metro carriages.
Trains with two or three carriage pairs are used, which means that the metro trains are no longer than six carriages long. During the rush hours on weekdays, 15 metro trains with six carriages each are in use.
Upgrades to the metro fleet
The current metro trains will be upgraded for automated driving in the near future.
New metro trains will also be purchased in the near future due to the west metro line and possible other expansions. The M300 series’ metro trains will be acquired from Spanish rail vehicle manufacturer CAF.
