What is it?

  • A food truck is a mobile trading stall that does not have its own permanent area. Instead, the idea is that the food truck carries with it all that it requires to do business, takes away all possible waste and similar and leaves nothing but satisfied customers behind.

Where?

  • The trading spots in the city centre area, Hakaniementori square, Säästöpankinranta and Vaasanpuistikko are specified in a map appendix (with trading times).
  • Outside of the city centre, food trucks are permitted in nearly all of the city's streets and squares. These areas can be used for food truck operations as long as other activities in the area (traffic, events, residents, etc.) are not disturbed, their safety endangered or the areas damaged. Please note that streets must have at least 2 metres of space for pedestrians. Food truck operations are not allowed in parks.
  • Of the beaches in Helsinki only the following can be used for food truck operations:
    • Furuvik beach
    • Hevossalmi beach
    • Iso Kallahti beach
    • Pakila beach
    • Porvariskuninkaanpuisto beach
    • Tapaninvainio beach
    • Veijarivuori beach
  • New sales spots can be suggested here.

How much does it cost?

  • The entrepreneur will pay the Public Works Department either 1,500 euros (+ VAT) for the ongoing calendar
year and the next January or 200 euros (+ VAT)/month.

How do I apply for it?

  • See the procedure guide about how to start up a food truck business.
  • See also the contract terms and the instructions by the Enviroment Centre concerning food trucks.
  • Reserve an appointment at the Urban Environment Division. If you want to be granted a permit immediately, please bring a tax debt certificate and a trade register extract (no more than three months old) with you.
  • Contracts can be renewed through the Urban Environment Division's customer service.
  • Currently permits are granted up to January 2018.

What else should I know?

  • More information about the registration of a food truck is found in Trafi's website here and here (in Finnish).
  • Future and current street works and events in the map service of the City of Helsinki.
  • New sales spots can be suggested here.
  • You are allowed to sell food products from a bicycle, cart or moped (registered in class L1e or L2e) without a separate permit as long as the duration of the sales activity is short and you do not set up any structures on the ground (such as a table, chairs or stands). However, please make sure to take care of all relevant official obligations related to food products, obey traffic regulations and do not disturb other traffic, litter or damage the city. If you are planning on selling at an event, contacting the event organiser in advance is recommended.

Details concerning the contract terms

  • Selling spots A1 and A2 on Asema-aukio have been removed due to the city bicycle station.
  • Please note in all areas meant for food trucks that during times with a lot of snow the area may be out of use for food trucks. The contract is not refundable due to snow situation.
