Environmental impact of plans

An act on the environmental impact of plans and programmes took effect in 2005.

According to this act, an environmental impact assessment is always conducted on new national land use goals governed by various laws, regional waste plans, environmental protection programmes, regional programmes, and transport and traffic plans for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in accordance with the act on the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council.  

An environmental report is prepared in the assessment process. Also reported is how citizens and the authorities are heard in the process.
