How can you identify an indoor air problem?

Most indoor air problems can be fixed by changing the ways the space is used or through building management measures. However, this is not enough in situations where the problem is due to structural damage to the building. As a consequence of such damage, microbes that are detrimental to humans can be released into indoor air.

Structural damage can be identified by a strange odour of the indoor air (such as the smell of mould or root cellar). Sometimes, the problem is latent and is discovered when physical symptoms start appearing.

Most health hazards related to indoor air remain at symptom level and the number of actual diagnosed illnesses is small. Despite this, all suspected indoor air problems caused by structural damage must be inspected without delay.
