A pleasant sound environment and silence promote health and wellbeing in diverse ways. In addition to reducing noise hazards, important goals of land use planning in Helsinki include retention of quiet areas and development of pleasant sound environments.
Helsinki has many fairly quiet areas with peaceful sound environments. The silence of an area can be assessed by the local sound levels and by people’s perceptions.
The urban quiet areas of Helsinki have been defined on the basis of surveys of resident perceptions. The surveys are complemented by information on noise caused by transport and other noise sources as well as by assessments of the qualities of the areas defined as a quiet area.
The areas of Helsinki perceived as quiet are highlighted by blue on the map included on the pages.
