Dogs in the city

The Public Works Department has constructed over 80 dog parks around the city for allowing dogs a place to run and play freely. Some dog parks have separate areas for smaller and bigger dogs. A few beaches have also been allocated for dogs to have a swim. See dog parks and swimming sites on Service Map.

The Public Order Act Obligates

Dogs must be kept on a leash in public spaces. Even when on a leash, a dog must not be allowed onto public beaches, children’s playgrounds, the market place during opening hours or to a ski track or sports field maintained for public use, unless specifically permitted. In addition, dog owners must clean up after their dog in maintained areas. It is recommended that dog owners carry small bags that can be discarded in the nearest bin. Violation of these obligations may lead to a fine. (Public Order Act 27.6.2003/612, 14 §)

Associations for Dog Owners

Dog owners have several associations based on hobbies, kennels or breeds. The interest group for these associations is the Finnish Kennel Club. The local organisation in the capital city region is the Helsingin Seudun Kennelpiiri.
