Private daycare allowance

If a family opts for private daycare for their child, they are eligible to receive the private care allowance from Kela.
Payment of the allowance can begin immediately after the payment of the parental allowance ends.

The private care allowance consists of

  • basic care allowance
  • income-dependent care supplement
  • Helsinki supplement.

*Care supplement depends on the income of the family. If a family is entitled for the care supplement it is also entitled to additional Helsinki-supplement of 60 EUR.
**Helsinki-supplement is paid, when the daycare is full time daycare - over 20 hours/week.

Helsinki supplement is not paid for children who are in private daycare in addition to receiving preschool education.

Allowance for private care supplementing free preschool education

Applying for the allowance

The child's parent must apply for the allowance from Kela via the appropriate forms application for child home care allowance and private care allowance (WH1e).

A private daycare centre, family daycare provider or a child minder hired at home will fill a Private Daycare Provider Identification Form (WH2e).

Payment of the allowance

Kela pays the private care allowance to the daycare provider: a private daycare centre, private childminder or a childminder who has been hired to work in the family's home.

Hiring a nanny in the family’s home

A family may hire a nanny for their home using the child home care allowance if the child is under three years of age and using the private daycare allowance if the child is under school age.
