The city of Helsinki offers pre-primary education in English as different kind of bilingual options, where the amount of English as the language of instruction varies. In addition to the municipal options, Helsinki has private daycare centres that offer pre-primary education in English. Learn more about the municipal and private options below.

Pre-primary education in English in municipal daycare centres

The city of Helsinki offers extensive bilingual Finnish-English pre-primary education and English-enriched pre-primary education. The way these two options differ is the amount of English as the language of instruction. In extensive bilingual Finnish-English pre-primary education, 25–50% of the instruction is in English, and in English-enriched pre-primary education, the amount of English is 10–25 % of the instruction.


Extensive bilingual pre-primary education (25–50% in English)

How to apply to extensive bilingual Finnish-English pre-primary education

  • Places in the daycare centres that offer extensive bilingual Finnish-English pre-primary education are primarily offered to children who live within the admission area of the daycare centres.
  • Children who do not live within the admission area can apply and get a place if there are free places in the group.
  • Apply for a place on the City of Helsinki e-Services by submitting an Application for pre-primary education.
  • Choose the daycare centres you wish to apply to. Find the daycare centres by first choosing the area and then the district in the dropdown menus. Areas and districts of the daycare centres are listed on this page. 
  • In the additional information field, type in that you prefer a place in the extensive bilingual Finnish-English pre-primary education.


English-enriched pre-primary education (10–25 % in English)

How to apply to English-enriched pre-primary education

  • Places in the daycare centres that offer English-enriched pre-primary education are primarily offered to children who live within the admission area of the daycare centres.
  • Children who do not live within the admission area can apply and get a place if there are free places in the group.
  • Apply for a place for your child in the City of Helsinki e-Services by submitting the Application for pre-primary education.
  • Choose the daycare centres you wish to apply to. Find the daycare centres by first choosing the area and then the district in the dropdown menus. Areas and districts of the daycare centres are listed on this page. 
  • In the additional information field, type in that you prefer a place in the English-enriched pre-primary education.

Options in private daycare centres

In addition to the pre-primary education offered by the City of Helsinki, there are private daycare centres that offer pre-primary education in English. Some of the private daycare centres offer pre-primary education entirely in English and others 25–50% in English.
