Applying for preschool education

In Helsinki, preschool education in Finnish is provided in daycare centres. All children permanently residing in Finland are entitled to free preschool education for a year before their compulsory education begins. Additionally, immigrants of the appropriate age can apply for preschool education.

The preschool education consists of four hours a day during school hours. In connection with the application for preschool education, you can also apply for additional municipal daycare.

Application for preschool education

Preschool education is mainly applied for using an electronic application. If you are applying for a preschool education place at a private daycare centre, contact the daycare centre of your choice
directly.

Information of a child's preschool place will be sent to parents at the latest during week 11.

Electronic application

Applications for preschool education and municipal daycare are submitted electronically. To do so, the parents must have an access to a Finnish bank's online services. The child must have a Finnish personal identification number.

In order to submit the application, you must identify yourself with the sign-in information of the bank's online service. If you are using the service for the first time, you must also register.

Form application

Application forms for preschool education are used in the following cases:

  • The child does not have a Finnish identification number.
  • The family does not have an on-line service from a Finnish bank.
  • Applying using the electronic application is otherwise not possible.

The application form must be posted or left at the daycare centre of the applicant's choice.

When returning an application it is recommended that you make an appointment with the head of the daycare centre. If the need for a place is acute you should contact the daycare centre of your choice.
