Illness

Illness and return to daycare

A sick child must not be brought to daycare. If a child falls ill in daycare, the parents will be notified immediately and the child must be picked up from daycare as soon as possible. If a child falls ill suddenly and exhibits severe symptoms, the staff will take the child to the nearest health station or hospital emergency clinic (primarily the HUCH Hospital for Children and Adolescents). The parents are responsible for the child's further treatment.

The child may return to daycare when he/she has enough energy to participate in the activities and there is no more risk of infection. Where needed, the doctor or nurse will determine time required for the child's recovery.

Medical care

If a child requires regular medication in daycare, the parents must provide the daycare centre with instructions written by the doctor. If necessary, the child's parents, health care representatives and daycare staff will negotiate the arrangement of the child's medication (e.g., diabetes and asthma medication) on a case-by-case basis.

A child who has fallen acutely ill may be brought to daycare during the course of medication after a sufficient period of recovery. The staff will administer the medication carrying the name of the child in question in accordance with the doctor's instructions. Homeopathic products will not be administered to children in daycare.

Treatment of epidemics

In the event of epidemics, hygiene will be intensified with hand sanitiser and by increasing the cleaning of touch surfaces. This should also be done at home.

If more than one cases of scarlet fever, tonsillitis, impetigo, ophthalmia, diarrhoea or vomiting are observed, the daycare staff will contact a nurse or doctor for treatment instructions and notify the health centre of a suspected epidemic. The city epidemiologist and nurses treat epidemics in cooperation with the health stations.

Impact of illness on the daycare fee

If a child is absent for all days of activity in a calendar month due to illness, no fee will be charged. If a child is absent from daycare for 11 days of activity in a calendar month due to illness, half of the monthly fee will be charged. Records of absence in the customer data system may not be retroactively changed to indicate absence due to illness.
