The subject ‘mother tongue and literature’ involves different syllabuses. The guardian selects a suitable syllabus for the pupil.
The pupil can study Finnish as a second language and literature (S2) if their mother tongue is not Finnish or they have a multilingual background. The selection of the syllabus is always based on the pupil’s needs as assessed by the pupil’s teachers. When assessing the suitable syllabus, the following matters are taken into account:
The S2 syllabus can be taught in S2 lessons or separately during the Finnish language and literature lessons. The objectives and contents of the S2 syllabus are mainly the same as in the Finnish language and literature syllabus. However, the S2 studies do not add to the number of hours in the pupil’s timetable.
The pupil will study according to the S2 syllabus until they achieve sufficient skills to study according to the Finnish language and literature syllabus. A pupil studying the Finnish language and literature syllabus may also move on to the S2 syllabus when necessary.
