Options in English in municipal schools

The City of Helsinki offers three kinds of English-language options for basic education. These options vary in terms of the amount of English as the language of teaching and learning, and in terms of the entry requirements and ways to apply.

If you are interested in applying for a school place in one of these programmes, please read the entry requirements and admission guidelines carefully to find out whether you are eligible to get a place.

The options introduced here are available in municipal schools, which means that they are run by the City of Helsinki. Please note that the amount of English can vary from one school to another. The percentages in the graphs are approximate averages.

Basic education in English

This is also referred to as English-medium or English-taught basic education, which means that all of the teaching and learning is in English, apart from the compulsory Finnish and Finnish literature studies.

Go to the basic education in English main page for entry requirements, admission dates and more.

About 80 percent of the teaching in basic education in English is in English and 20% is in Finnish.

Bilingual education

In Finnish-English bilingual education, 25 – 50 % of the learning and teaching is in English, and the rest is in Finnish. This is a great option if you have proficiency in either Finnish or English, or know both.

To find out more about the entry requirements, admissions and schools that offer Finnish-English bilingual basic education, go to the bilingual education page.

In bilingual education, 25 to 50 percent of the teaching is in English, and the rest in Finnish.

English-enriched education

In English-enriched basic education, 10 – 25 % of the learning and teaching is in English, and the rest is in Finnish.

To learn more about the English-enriched education, and to find local schools that offer it, go to the English-enriched education page.

In English-enriched education, 10 to 25 percent of the teaching is in English.
