Moving on to 7th grade

After the sixth grade, pupils have the right to get a place in the 7th grade in their local school or continue at the comprehensive school that offers grades 1–9.

When moving on to 7th grade the pupil can:

  • go to the assigned local school based on the pupil’s home address
  • continue at the pupil's current comprehensive school that offers grades 1–9
  • continue in weighted-curriculum education, bilingual education, or English-language basic education started in the 1st or 3rd grade
  • apply to weighted-curriculum education, bilingual education, or English-language basic education
  • apply to a school other than the assigned local school.

Applying to weighted-curriculum, bilingual or English-language basic education, or to a school other than the local school

Some schools run by the City of Helsinki offer weighted-curriculum education, bilingual education and English-language basic education.

In order to be selected, a pupil has to take an aptitude test or a language test. The aptitude tests for weighted-curriculum education will be held during 11 January–9 February 2023. The language tests for bilingual education, English-language basic education, and B2 language studies in Latin will be held on 25 January 2023.  The test is taken at the school where the applicant has primarily applied to. With the same test, you can also apply to other schools offering the same weighted-curriculum subject or language in bilingual education.

When applying to weighted-curriculum, bilingual, or English-language basic education, or to a school other than the local school, the pupil can choose up to five different schools and programmes. School options are placed for the form in order of priority, so that the top option is the first school option, the second highest is the second school option, and so on. If a student is selected for the first application option, other school options will be ignored.
