Afternoon activities at schools

Service description

Children are selected for afternoon activities for one academic year at a time. Children with disabilities or children on the autism spectrum can receive afternoon activities until they have finished grade 9.

Afternoon activities is not available during school breaks and holidays, or on Saturday school days.

Applying for the 2020–2021 school year will be from 23 March to 8 May 2020

NOTE: Due to the coronavirus outbreak, you cannot pick up or deliver the application form to your school of choice in person.

You can send the form via secure email, which requires that you verify your identity with a bank code, mobile ID, or an official ID card that contains a chip. This identity verification acts as your signature on the form.

As not all of the service is available in English, this requires the following steps:

  1. Download and save the application form you need to your computer.
  2. Open the saved form and fill it in, then save it under the pupil’s name as so: lastname_firstname.
  3. Go to the website link that reads Send the afternoon activity form via secure email. You will find the link and the blank forms at the foot of the page.
  4. Add your email address to the Lähettäjä (= Sender) field, and proceed to verify your identity.
  5. Continue through the process until you reach Uusi viesti (= New message) view. Enter IP-hakemus (= Afternoon activity registration) in the subject field.
    In the lower corner, click on Valitse tiedostot (= Choose file). Search for the lastname_firstname file you just saved on your computer and choose it as your attachment by clicking on Liitä (= Add attachment).
    To finish, click on Lähetä (= Send).

Or send the form by mail to, Education Division, Afternoon activities, PO Box 51300, 00099 City of Helsinki or drop off the form between 8 am and 4 pm at the City of Helsinki’s Education Division offices at Töysänkatu 2 D, in Helsinki’s Valilla district.

The decision concerning afternoon activities at schools will be posted to the child’s guardian by 26 June 2020. Afternoon activities start on the first day of the school year and continue until the end of the school year.

Outside the application period, enrolment forms for afternoon playground activities should be submitted at the playground and applications for schools’ afternoon activities should be sent to the address Education Division, Afternoon activities, PO Box 51300, 00099 City of Helsinki.

Please remember to inform the city if your child stops attending afternoon activities.

After-school activity search in Helsinki will show the different facilities and service providers that are available. Contact the service provider directly with any questions.

Fees for afternoon activities arranged by schools

Families using afternoon activities arranged by schools must pay a monthly fee. Parents and guardians without extra funds can apply to waive the monthly fee, if necessary.
