Demographic statistics, forecasts and research

The population of Helsinki is growing rapidly, and the trend is expected to continue in the future. In addition to population growth, the most significant demographic phenomena of recent years are an increase in the city’s foreign-born population, an increase in the number of families with small children, and the aging of the population.

The demographic forecasts produced by the Urban Research and Statistics Unit underlie economic and operational planning, the determination of appropriate levels of services, and city planning. Versatile demographic data is also necessary, for example, for the study of welfare phenomena and housing conditions.

Demographic statistical and research activities during the current programme term focus on demographic statistics, demographic forecasts and demographic research.

More information on projects is available in Finnish.
