Basic education for adults

You can take part in basic education for adults (aikuisten perusopetus), if you have not completed your basic education, you discontinued your basic education, or you want to improve the grades on your basic education certificate.

Completing the entirety of comprehensive school (peruskoulu) takes about 2-4 years. If necessary, your studies can be stopped for a certain period and continued later.

Basic education for adults is available at Helsinki Upper Secondary School for Adults (Helsingin aikuislukio).

At Helsinki Upper Secondary School for Adults, you can
- study the introductory phase (alkuvaihe) to basic education for adults, where you can also learn how to read and write
- study the final phase (päättövaihe) of basic education for adults, where you complete your basic education and receive a basic education certificate

The application period for basic education for adults takes place twice a year:
- Apply at the beginning of August for the group that starts in September.
- Apply from November to December for the group that starts in January.

INTRODUCTORY PHASE TO BASIC EDUCATION

In the group for the introductory phase, you will study the syllabus of 1st to 6th grades. You can also learn how to read and write, if necessary.

You can study in this group if
- you are over 18
- you have no basic education certificate from your own country or Finland
- you have gaps in your knowledge and skills corresponding to content in the lower grade syllabus

On these courses, you will learn basic knowledge and skills you can use in various fields in your further studies. A personal study plan will be drawn up for you, consisting of Finnish, mathematics, IT, environment and nature studies and social studies.

The education starts in August. The duration of the education is one year. Classes take place on four evenings per week: Monday-Thursday, 3/4 or 5 pm to 8.10 pm. Instruction is given at the East Helsinki location. Studying is free for students who are aiming to get a basic education certificate.

FINAL PHASE OF BASIC EDUCATION

In the group for the final phase of basic education, you will study the syllabus of 7th to 9th grades. The goal of these studies is to get a basic education certificate.

You can study in this group if
- you are over 18
- you have no basic education certificate from your own country or Finland

Your language skills, study skills and mathematical skills will be tested at the start of the studies.

The studies begin in September or January. Their duration is about two years. Classes take place on four evenings per week: Monday-Thursday, 3 or 5 pm to 8.10 pm.

You will receive intensified instruction in Finnish. In addition, you will study English, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, History, Social studies, Chemistry, Physics, Ethics and IT. Instruction is given at the East Helsinki location. At the start of your studies, a personal study plan will be drawn up for you.

Studying is free for students who are aiming to get a basic education certificate.
