Learning Finnish or Swedish at daycare

Children are taught Finnish or Swedish as part of the everyday activities at a daycare centre (päiväkoti). The entire staff at daycare centres take part in teaching the language. In addition, a Finnish as a second language teacher (S2 kindergarten teacher) or a language support kindergarten teacher visits daycare centres and helps with the language instruction.

The daycare centre staff evaluate whether a child needs instruction in Finnish or Swedish. A language skills development plan is drawn up for the child together with their parents.

Daycare centres do not give instruction in a child's home language.

Ask your child's daycare centre for more information.
