The Ruskeasuo roadworks

A new tram and bus depot is being built in Ruskeasuo. For the depot, a rail connection from Mannerheimintie, via Koroistentie and Nauvontie, will be built. The contract also involves renovating Korppaanmäentie and a tram lane separated from other traffic will be built on the street in order to facilitate rail traffic. The first pair of tram stops on Korppaanmäentie will be moved to Mannerheimintie, south of the Korppaanmäentie intersection.

What will be built during the roadworks?

The contract involves renovating the entire intersection area of Mannerheimintie, Koroistentie and Korppaanmäentie.

On Mannerheimintie, bicycle lanes will be made into one-way lanes and waiting areas will be built for cyclists for turning. The accessibility of pedestrian crossings will be improved.

Due to the tram stops to be built on Mannerheimintie, four trees have to be removed from the street and the separating lanes and pavements on the street need to be made more narrow.

A new tram lane will be built on Koroistentie. It will replace the current tree lane. A lane for bicycle traffic will be built on the southern edge of the street and an one-way cycleway will be built on the northern edge of the street. Structures and municipal infrastructure (water pipes, sewers and cables) of the street will also be renovated.

Due to the additional space required by the tram line, eight street trees need to be removed. Four new trees and some shrubs will be planted on the southern edge of the street, close to the kiosk. The kiosk will be preserved.

The renovation of Korppaanmäentie involves renovating the structures and municipal infrastructure (water pipes, sewers and cables) of the street. Traffic arrangements will also be changed. A lane for bicycle traffic will be built on the northern edge of the street, between Mannerheimintie and Paimionkuja, and an one-way cycleway will be built on the southern edge of the street.

The current parking spaces between the tree lines will be kept, with the exception of the southern part of the street between Paimionkuja and Tilkankatu. In the place of the parking spaces and tree lines will be built a new motor traffic lane towards the city centre and a tram lane separated from other traffic.

In the place of the tramp stop pair to be removed will be built islands where trees and shrubs will be planted. Additionally, two street trees will be replaced due to their poor condition.

A new tram line will be built in the middle of Nauvontie. There will be parking lanes on both sides of the road. Structures and municipal infrastructure (water pipes, sewers and cables) of the street will also be renovated.

Additionally, a noise barrier will be built between the street and the allotment garden located on the eastern side of the street. Climbing plants will be planted between the noise barrier and the pavement, and shrubs will be planted on the side of the allotment garden. Building the noise barrier requires removing six trees, shrubs and brushwood.

The work causes changes to traffic, noise and dust

The work will begin in the Nauvontie and Koroistentie area, after which the construction work will expand to Korppaanmäentie and Mannerheimintie. Both the Mannerheimintie intersection area and the work on Koroistentie and Nauvontie require excavation, which causes noise. Excavation is primarily carried out on weekdays between 7 am and 10 pm.The worksite can cause dust nuisance, even though the aim is to minimise the formation of dust.

Tram traffic on Korppaanmäentie will be disrupted for about a year, starting in mid-August 2022. The traffic will be managed with compensatory buses. At the start of the contract, the section of Korppaanmäentie between Paimionkuja and Tilkankatu will be closed to motor vehicle traffic. However, the street will remain open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

On Koroistentie, the section between Nauvontie and Mannerheimintie will be partially used by the worksite, but it will remain open to traffic.

The contract area on Nauvontie will be closed to through traffic. The alternative route for motor vehicle traffic and pedestrian and bicycle traffic will run via Mannerheimintie. The traffic connections to properties and the allotment garden will remain throughout the contract.

On Mannerheimintie, two lanes in both directions will be kept throughout the contract.
