Geothermal feasibility study and contracts

Order a geothermal well feasibility study to find out whether it is possible to build geothermal heating on your plot. Apply to add a geothermal clause to your plot lease agreement. Make a lease- or placement agreement with the city.

If you are building on a leased plot owned by the City of Helsinki, and your lease agreement does not allow the construction of a geothermal heat well, you must apply to the city to add a geothermal clause to your plot lease agreement. In new releases, a geothermal well can be agreed at the time of signing the lease.

Order a feasibility study for a geothermal well

In the case of a report on the feasibility of a geothermal well, you will receive information on whether there are underground spaces, structures, space allocations or cables under the site area that may affect plans on geothermal construction. Or whether the property is located in a groundwater area, nature reserve or historical site, which may prevent geothermal construction.

You will need a report on the feasibility of a geothermal site to apply for a building permit or planning permission for the project.

Additional information

When ordering a report on feasibility for a detached house plot, please attach a map drawing showing the planned locations of the geothermal wells to the order. The map must already show the property and its borders.

First, a preliminary enquiry must be ordered in the case of a plot for a blocks of flats to determine whether geothermal construction is possible on the property. When the more detailed plan is ready, order a report on feasibility. Attach to the order a layout plan showing the planned locations of the geothermal wells and their depths and angles of direction as well as the inclination

To place an order, you will need to fill in the following information:
- the applicant's email address and telephone number
- the street address and real property unit ID

Apply to add a geothermal clause to your plot lease agreement

If you are building on a leased plot owned by the City of Helsinki, and your lease agreement does not allow the construction of a geothermal heat well, you must apply to the city to add a geothermal clause to your plot lease agreement. In new releases, a geothermal well can be agreed at the time of signing the lease.

Make a placement agreement for the installation of geothermal heat in a public area

You will need a placement agreement with the city if geothermal wells are to be built or placed in a public area. The feasibility study will provide you with information on how to conclude a placement agreement and whether you also need a lease agreement with the city.

Make a placement and lease agreement before applying for a building permit or planning permission. Attach the approved agreement to the permit application.
