Helsinki as a cycling city

Let’s make Helsinki the third best cycling city in the world! OmaStadi campaign 2021 to improve bicycle traffic.

When asked what the best cycling cities in the world are, most people will answer Amsterdam and Copenhagen. When asked to name a third city, however, they will hesitate, and no other city stands out among the answers.

Helsinki wants to change this by aiming to become the third best cycling city in the world.

Let’s make Helsinki the third best cycling city in the world! OmaStadi campaign 2021 to improve bicycle traffic.

Jump on the saddle!

Let’s work together to make cycling in Helsinki safer, more pleasant and more common. We extend this invitation to all active Helsinki residents, regardless of their preferred mode of transport. Jump on the saddle and use the Journey Planner  to find a route.

Cyclist’s checklist about the new Road Traffic Act

  • Lights on during twilight and darkness – a white light at the front, a red one at the back.
  • Make sure that your bike has reflectors, a bell and fully functional brakes.
  • On the new bicycle street, cyclists set the pace – Kulosaaren puistotie features Helsinki’s first cycling street.
  • Cyclists may ride in both directions on one-way streets if allowed by signs.
  • If the cycle path is on the left side of the road from the cyclist’s point of view, the cyclist may also ride on the right side of the road, either on the roadway or the shoulder.
