Language immersion refers to a method of foreign language learning in which a foreign language is learned in natural connections and meaningful situations.
The language of instruction, that is, the immersion language, is Swedish. The goal is for the language learners to become functionally bilingual and to achieve good language proficiency. Language immersion at Helsinki's Finnish-language daycare centres is primarily meant for Finnish-speaking children.
Children entering language immersion are not expected to know Swedish, and they can use their first language until they are able to use Swedish. The parents are also not expected to speak Swedish.
