Matriculation examination

At the end of general upper secondary education, students take the matriculation examination, which is the term used for the national school-leaving examination in Finland. It is a maturity test taken in Finnish or Swedish to demonstrate the knowledge and skills learnt during your general upper secondary studies.

Matriculation examination changed in spring 2022

Starting from spring 2022, the matriculation examination consists of at least five tests. This change applies to you if you registered to take the matriculation examination test in or after spring 2022. A mother tongue and literature test in Finnish, Swedish or Sami language is compulsory for all. To complete the examination, you must choose at least four other tests in different subjects, selected from at least three of the following groups:

  • mathematics
  • second national language (Finnish or Swedish)
  • foreign language
  • a subject in the field of humanities and natural sciences

The matriculation examination is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, at the same time at all general upper secondary schools.
