Common responsibility, individual solutions project is funded by European Social Fund and is implemented by Helsinki Adult Vocational Institute from 1.9.2015 to 31.10.2017.  In this project, public authorities and civil organizations cooperate to find individual pathways to vocational studying, work, entrepreneurship and civil participation for immigrant stay-at-home parents.

The goal of the project: This project aims to improve wellbeing, develop active citizenship skills and societal knowledge of immigrant stay-at-home parents residing in Helsinki and thus to motivate them to return to studies and labor market.

Target group: The main target group of the project are vulnerable immigrant stay-at-home parents, residing in Helsinki. The secondary target group are non-Finnish speaking students of Helsinki Adult Vocational Institute.

Project activities:
1. We develop Finnish courses for stay-at-home parents so that they would include more social and labor life information as well as provide participants with practical language skills. We support our students’ transition from language courses to vocational studies and labor market by individual career counselling. Our individual career counselling helps students to make their next step in integration either through entering labor force or taking part in other civic activity.
2. We assess the course and support measures’ selection of the Helsinki Adult Vocational Institute from the point of view of immigrant student . We help developing this selection by taking into account the needs of immigrant students, for example, through extending study paths, supported by additional Finnish language studies. We also pilot mentoring program for immigrant vocational students.
3. We pilot Kurdish and Somali speaking peer-support groups, which expand participants’ societal knowledge and support the empowerment of participants as well as their educational and career advancement.

We customize services, support measures and instruments for our target group in close cooperation with different departments of the City of Helsinki as well as with civil society organizations. Representatives of social and health, adult education, library, daycare, sports, employment sectors as well as civil society organizations presents their services in our peer-support groups and Finnish language courses.
