Nature centres and schools
Harakka Nature Centre
The Harakka Nature Centre is located on the Harakka Island off the shoreline of the Kaivopuisto Park. The centre is open to the public from May through September. A boat takes visitors to the island at 30-minute intervals. The Nature Centre presents nature in the archipelago, the Baltic Sea and small-scale renewable energy devices. The island has extraordinarily rich flora and species of birds. A nature trail snakes through the island.
The Harakka Nature Centre organizes excursions, events and exhibitions. Species of sea life in the Gulf of Finland are displayed in the Aquarium House.
Daycare centres are offered island adventures, and schools are offered nature days. Various training is available for educators.
Finnish Nature Centre Haltia
The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia is located at the edge of the Nuukio National Park in northern Espoo. Haltia’s exhibits present the entire Finnish nature from the fell tops of Lapland to the outer archipelago. Haltia organizes nature evenings, guided excursions and special exhibitions. Outside the Nature Centre, the wonders of the Nuuksio Lake and highland await visitors. There are nature school days, tours of the exhibition and summer camps for schools.
Nature School Arkki at Helsinki Zoo
Nature School Arkki provides experiential instruction on its nature school days and in events. The themes include biodiversity, protection of endangered species and animal behaviour. The nature school organizes summer camps for elementary school-age children. The school organizes courses for educators.
Environment School Polku of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre
Environment School Polku (“path) located in Kalasatama offers inspiring learning sessions for children as well as versatile courses and environmental education materials for educators. The main themes are sustainable consumption and how to grow up to be an environmentally responsible, active citizen.
Meriharju Nature House
Meriharju Nature House is a nature centre focusing on nature and environmental questions. The Nature House is located in Vuosaari in the middle of the rocky Uutela pine forest near the sea. Meriharju Nature House offers nature school programmes for Helsinki comprehensive schools. The house can be rented by associations, other organizations and groups for events and special programmes.
Nature School Uttern
The nature school maintained by The Finnish Society for Nature and Environment – Natur och Miljö – and located in Siuntio organizes Swedish-language environmental education and Swedish-language nature school days for Helsinki schools.
Opportunities for students provided by nature schools
Nature schools provide opportunities for students in teacher training to monitor teaching, to make visits, to teach groups, to plan educational materials and to perform applied training.
