Environmental regulations

Environmental regulations are enforced in Helsinki to achieve the goals of the environmental protection legislation.

The regulations cover the entire city unless otherwise stated below. The goal of the environmental regulations is to prevent deterioration of the environment with regard to local urban conditions, as ruled in the Environmental Protection Act.

The City of Helsinki environmental regulations took effect on 1 January 2005. The regulations were revised on 1 July 2006 and 1 March 2009 on the basis of experiences and feedback.

The common waste management regulations of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and Kirkkonummi specify the general principles of waste management as defined in the waste legislation.
