Co-operation between school and home

The principles of co-operation between school and home are defined in the school curriculum. They include:

  • Parent meetings
  • Parent sessions
  • Contacts electronically through the Wilma web interface

In practice co-operation and joint activities are agreed upon by school and guardians. Co-operation is interactive. Guardians bear the primary responsibility for a child’s upbringing and for fulfilling the requirements of compulsory education. The school is responsible for supporting a child’s or an adolescent’s growth and learning as a member of the school community.

Every school has a board comprising representatives proposed by parents from among themselves. The City of Helsinki Education Committee elects the board members for four years at a time. The board decides on the school’s operation plan, selects the permanent teaching staff, approves the budget and presents the school curriculum to the Education Committee for approval.

Many schools also have a parents’ association that supports the activities of the entire school.
