The Environmental Supervision Unit is responsible for the various monitoring and enforcement work in Helsinki pursuant to the Environment Protection Act, Waste Act and Health Protection Act. The unit is divided into sections having responsibility for indoor environment, permits & environmental nuisances and soil & water. The managers of these sections act as environmental inspectors.
Indoor environment
- investigating health hazards and setting repairs in motion for apartments and houses, day-care premises, schools, educational institutions, children’s homes, and homes for the elderly
Permits and environmental nuisances
- industrial environmental permits in Helsinki
- monitoring tasks and the handling of permits and notifications concerning waste management, air protection, noise suppression, water protection and chemicals for factories, facilities and work premises
- monitoring of the classification, warning signs and retailing of chemicals
- temporary activities such as outdoor concerts or construction work that cause particularly disturbing noise
- construction work causing dust or chemical hazards
- wastewater from buildings that does not enter the general sewage network
Soil and water
- dealing with applications for environmental permits and notifications concerning the remediation of contaminated soil in the Helsinki area
- the analyses, remediation and subsequent monitoring of contaminated soil
- monitoring of areas that treat earth and soil
- monitoring the general state of soil
- database of information on soil analyses and remediation, and the creation and maintenance of a database on any areas where contaminated soil is suspected
